Two surnames previously listed
(FLUKE and PLATT) were removed Mr.
FLUKE was married to my paternal cousin, Margie SETTLES (d. abt.
1985). To my knowledge, they had no children. (Note: I have some papers of
the late Mr. FLUKE in my possession of his service in the U.S. Navy which
gives his personal physical description, etc., and will be happy to share a
scan of them via email with any of his family members.) The
name PLATT is found in the name of my paternal grandmother's brother: Edward
PLATT BATTIN. It was my assumption that PLATT must have been a family
name somewhere in the line. Searching as far back as 1700, the name PLATT
does not reappear. However, the surnames of some of the women in that line
have not yet been identified by me so the possibility exists that Uncle Ed
was named for a family line of the name PLATT, a family friend, doctor or
midwife. Would appreciate any information from other BATTIN/PLATT
relatives. Note
re: HARGER: Mr. "Hub" HARGER was married to my paternal second
cousin, Zola HOGAN, daughter of Henry and Mable SHEPARD HOGAN.
(Hub and Zola had one son, Jeff HARGER, lives in the southwestern
Virginia area and has no children. Hub and Zola are both deceased. Aunt Mable
passed away in 2002, 97 years young.) Am looking for a VALENTINE link to the HOGAN name. My late Aunt June HOGAN Whitlock told me in the mid-1970s that a family named VALENTINE in Roanoke, Virginia was working on our HOGAN genealogy. To this date, I have not been able to locate that family and Aunt June never got around to taking me to meet them as she had hoped. |

So how were the names in my family
tree derived? The surnames in my genealogy come from various sources including marriage, birth, death, cemetery, and other records and obituaries in my personal possession (as well as on-line); marriage, death, and census records which are maintained at the Franklin County Courthouse in Rocky Mount, Virginia and at the Franklin County Historical Society also located in Rocky Mount, Virginia (as well as on-line); interviews of family members of various branches of both sides of my family tree; records collected and archived by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) in Salt Lake City, Utah; various on-line genealogy sites including the Social Security Death Index, Ancestry.com and GenForum.com; research previously done by relatives of various branches who generously shared their research with me in various forms including scans, print-outs, photocopies, microfiche films, telephone discussions, emails, and other on-line web site links. |
